Summer Allergies…Happened So Fast…

Luna got her feet done on Saturday, my farrier was good enough to come and put new shoes on her and I am eternally grateful. She threw a shoe last week and she needed doing while in training. Some things I learned, she needs some work on patience and standing. She was not horrible but she was not good either. The front with the shoes she was just wiggly the back legs she was not good about at all but got better. With work she will get better but she has the patience of a flea (AKA Four year old mare!).

Anyway she wears a long nose fly mask and she is snotting behind it nonstop! Like grossness the trainer has to clean her up several times a day and I did the same when I was there, it is like snot, with dirt from the long nose and grazing. It is quite disgusting. If you look at the photo above you can see the outlines of the snot dirt boogers around her nose.

I know some of it is dirt and long nose but now I am wondering if she has some allergies going on. Going to call my vet today to see if we can try her on zyrtec just to see if it helps. The snot is clear until the dirt gets globbed onto it (GLOB is such a great word for this). Poor girl. She has to have the long nose fly mask due to her light white face but it is also not helping for this.

Does anyone else have this issue? Share with me any allergy tips you have and let me know your thoughts.

Otherwise, she is doing great at the trainers, she has a new buddy (Dragon, a QH pony) and she has two minis next to her who are Goblin and Ghoul. The trainer is enjoying working with her and now that she has two good shoes on and a hoof trim let’s hope she gets lots of saddle time now.

SO HOT! You are welcome with the song in your head now all day long from Grease 🙂

She rides her early in the am or late at night due to the almighty heat that is going on here right now (High of 98 today and tomorrow who knows what the heat index will be BLECH). Stay cool my friends!!

both me and the horses lately!

  1. Can you so sunblock instead of a long nose? I haven’t had any luck with any horses not getting those dirty and disgusting from nonstop snorting, but I feel you on the giant white snoot – Opie has sunblock hanging on his door and gets a quick smear every morning before going out.

  2. I’m with Carly too, try sunblock instead. I had long nose fly masks once and they seemed to kind of get snorted into their nostrils. I switched back to regular length pretty quickly.

Eros has allergies intermittently and it seems to be to the bedding. We always use pine shavings, but some he gets hives from and some he doesn’t. It’s a real mystery. He’s currently living on Benadryl which seems to do the trick.
