Luna News!

Luna is still growing up (she will be 4 in April, Remus will be 22 in April: HOW is this possible?) but as I was planning to bring her to NC in the near future an opportunity came up to actually possibly move her straight into a training situation with someone I trust immensely.

her mane and tail need TLC but otherwise her glow up is way okay

Aubrey was at the event camp last year (and will be again this year when I return in June) and I just really like her methods as well as how she brings her horses along (She works with OTTB thoroughbreds mostly so Luna will be a depature from that). I was having a hard time finding a trainer in the near area where I live to be able to work with her and when Aubrey posted she had openings available now, a light bulb moment occurred.

my actual expression…

So if I send her directly to Aubrey she can have a good basic start put on her, including backing and getting her going. Depending on the timeline since event camp is near Aubrey, I could possibly bring Luna back in June. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

Thoughts on this plan? Am I crazy to put a 4 year old in training and spend so much more than her actual purchase price? I just figure if she ends up not being quiet enough for me the better to market her to someone who may love her if she has a good basic start in education.

(Sidebar: I can’t thank Kris enough from Trinity Farm/White Oak who has been an integral part of Luna’s early education. Without her Luna would be only a feral filly. Thanks Kris, Sammy and White Oak for all the help in making her who she is today as she has definitely filled out and is not feral nor is too much of a psycho, so win win!).

So plan is in progress. Trying to find transport for Luna to the Atlanta area in the near future. Stay tuned!! Meanwhile Remus is doing great and just fat and happy as can be. I just realized I have no photos of him lately he is still really furry and really dark with his winter coloring. Hope he starts really shedding soon (and hope I actually remember to take some photos of him)!

Happy Wednesday!

  1. Any investment in the basics and starting of a horse is a GREAT investment! It lays the foundation for the rest of the horse’s life, be it good or bad. I’ve started lots of baby horses and each one has the benefits of more knowledge I gained from the one before, but I am proud to say that the first one I ever started (when I was 15) lived with me until he passed at 29 in 2022 and he was a fantastic horse.

  2. What a glow-up for Luna!! She is looking like such a lovely, big mare. I can’t believe how much she’s grown, honestly. I keep seeing her in my mind’s eye when she was lanky lol. I’d definitely say it’s good to get the basics with her and send her to Aubrey. My dad often jokes that the purchase price is never the most expensive part of buying/owning a horse, which he’s right lol So I’d definitely get backed and started 🙂 It really would be a great way to know if she’ll be a great future horse for you!

  3. Sounds like an excellent plan! It’s definitely not too soon for her to start learning the basics. I’m so excited to hear how it goes! She looks beautiful!

  4. This is the best idea. The couple of times I’ve done it I had zero regrets. Once was a horse that did end up not being a fit for me so like you say it was easy to market her with the hours and miles I would have never enjoyed accumulating. The other time it was just so nice to be able to get on and go and not have any of the mental baggage I seem to accumulate riding the really baby horse mistakes and bad decisions 🙂 Luna is absolutely gorgeous, by the way!

  5. Solid starting seems like a worthwhile investment in my opinion. Either she starts great and your partnership together can start as smoothly as one with a baby can go. Or, you don’t fit but she’s got a better chance at finding a safe and loving home because she’s been started well. Definitely good for all the possibilities.
