Perfection is a Myth…..says Luna

This is probably going to be a saga but maybe I can shorten it down. Luna’s training is on one hand going okay. On the other it is an effing mess. She has had issues with farriers, issues with getting shots, and just generally acting like a feral toddler some days. I told you about her vet visit but here is the rest of it.

She ended up going lame and my vet could NOT do a lameness exam (see above for feral) and we ended up drugging her and talking xrays of her front feet. We also did a metabolic exam (which was negative of course so more money into the money pit that is Luna!)

I have done the math and it is not pretty. I have spent way more than I should have on this filly.

She has had a past bout of laminitis (not bad but still her xrays show signs). We are just figuring she had it as a foal as no one has noticed her being off or in distress the last 3 plus years. My vet says stress and other things can cause it as well as eating grass.

But the farrier that came out to do her not only abused her but he also have all four of her feet at different angles. But because he whacked her several times (I was not there) she will not stand for a lameness test let alone a farrier appt.

SO Moving forward I will be hauling said Luna to the vet in early October. And she will be sedated and done by the farrier in house at my vet. Which I am sure will be so cheap (HAR HAR HAR I still have my humor). SO let’s recap shall we??

Luna:

  • Hormonal (Regumate required)
  • Feet are iffy if not downright horrible (Plan in place)
  • Not metabolic
  • Growing like a weedef and acting like a toddler most days
  • Very reactive to any kind of work being done (AKA vaccines, farriers, vets you name it)
  • Anything else I forgot??

Game plan is to bring her home in October to where Remus is let her chill and get to working back to being a solid citizen and not to be so much a brat. Then we will decide next steps. Hopefully shoeing will help(they put her on Equioxx which has made her so much less tender footed till she gets shoes on) and we can get her back in training sometime in the next couple months. But right now my wallet needs to heal. And I need to find a reason to spend much more money on her. Cause right now I am about at my wits end.

ANYWAY I am sure I missed some but overall this is what I am dealing with a 15.2 hand toddler in a paint body. OH AND since she can be cute anyone want to see a baby Luna?

  1. She’s still so cute. I’ll trade you an 18 hand brute who has to get dorm every single time he gets shoed because he doesn’t know how to stand still at seven years old. Oh… and he only has CUSTOM FRONT SHOES. Save me from the animals

  2. Oh boy, Young Sophie had a lot of parallels to how you describe Luna . It took a really long time for her to mature mentally and my bank account to recover. She is still herself and there are still good days and bad days but they’re not nearly as wildly up or down as they used to be. I’m currently struggling to find a saddle Princess S approves of, but that’s minor compared to the days I was worried she was going to take out the farrier (or the barn cat)
