A Timely Horse Owner Seminar

I got to attend a local vet clinic’s horse seminar this past Saturday with my friend Lindsay who boards her fat pony QH at the same farm as I board my fat normal sized QH. 🙂 It was about Cushings (PPID), Metabolic Syndrome, Back Pain and more. It was very interesting but my back could not handle the standing on concrete floor for longer than 2 hours (thanks Convention for that) so therefore I left before back pain was covered (ironic no?). But it was a ton of people and it was very interesting. Note to self bring your own chair next time (They had chairs but even though I got there early no chairs were open)!

First talk was this:

While they were indeed similar the first talk did touch on diet and nutrition for the metabolic syndrome and since we know Remus is a hefty boy I did listen closely to both talks!

Second talk was this.

We have always been pretty sure Remus has some insulin resistance or a metabolic issue (cresty neck anyone?) If you all forgot how fat he was when I got him you will love revisiting this post!

He doesn’t look horrible but we may do some testing down the road. I am a bit worried as his field is coming up green now and I do not want to have to worry about him in a full field again. But we will see!

The last talk (Alas the one I missed) looked interesting so I am hoping they post the slides sometime.

Spring is definitely heading this way and soon so time to start getting ready to do some things with my pony. Who turns 22 in April. EEKS (Also Luna turns 4 in April too) Time to get shit going.

where does time go??

  1. Oh this sounds interesting! Shiny, too, is a candidate for IR. I have her on some supplements, but it’s really been the thyroid meds that made the biggest difference for her. That and the riding twice a day all summer. Ugh, I hope we don’t have to do that again… Lol! Anyway, sounds like an interesting seminar.
Remus looks great, those dapples! And Luna too. Can’t wait to read along as you get things going with them!

  2. Ha, ha! So THAT is where the time goes. It was my barn cats playing with the clock all along. Great GIF selection as usual! I also can relate to the style of seating or lack thereof affecting my presence at presentations. Sitting or standing in one place is often painful for me now. That is one thing I appreciate about being with horses is that I am almost constantly moving whether doing barn chores, ground work or riding. No freezing in place. Well, except maybe in Winter! 🙂

  3. Our vet wants to test B next fall to confirm. I feel sad about it because I’ve owned her for life and always been on top of her diet and there’s literally nothing we can change management wise except adding some meds. It’s just a case of doing our best, I guess!
