Best Gnat Protection?

I know Remus did this before but thought it was when I was blogging but maybe not. I can’t seem to find it. ANYWAY my hot house flower diva did it again!

I went out to feed him last night and he came up and I noticed blood on his feet. I was like wow the flies are not that bad yet. That is weird. Then I looked up at his…ummmm privates? AND GROSS ME OUT

my exact face

He has blood and crust all up under there and he was swollen up. NOW Mind you it has been 30s-50s at night and low 70s daytime. LIKE NOT BAD HEAT OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT. Why horse why? GRAPHIC WARNING BELOW: (I didnt realize my phone could take such detailed photos LOL)

I got some dish soap and water (COLD sorry Remus) out and a sponge and scrubbed it up. Bless his heart, he stood like a statue. Then I slathered it with diaper rash cream which also got all over me! ICK.

I left him inside for a while and then Lindsay let him out when it was almost dark last night.

palate cleansing from the scarring of the photo above instead look at cute Ollie 🙂

This am he seemed much better and I am going out when it warms up a bit to wash it off more and put more slather stuff on it. I do have a call into the vet (Not an emergency) to see if they want to see it as there is some edema as well. Meanwhile my horse’s wee wee (Lindsay terms) is covered in diaper cream.

SO ANYONE else have a hot house flower? (SARAH I KNOW YOU DO, BUT HECK YOU ARE ONE TOO 🙂 HA)

Any suggestions? I hate fly sheets because it is humid here (OR will be soon). Meanwhile I am off to vet to get him more Thryo-L (YES he tested high again not crazy high but a bit so we are going to keep him on that in the summer) and will talk to vet regarding him. I think his sheath needs cleaning too. FUN TIMES. OF COURSE the vet was just there last week soooo Remus timing could be better.

he is FINALLY SHEDDING OUT. there is my lovely golden buckskin. Whew

NO real news on Luna though her feet are getting better and she should start training full force very soon. FINGERS CROSSED. I am just throwing money around left and right here…..don’t mind me.

me to everyone….

  1. Oh LORD. How many other weird horse things can happen? Dalton has had diarrhea for the past month (who knows why? allergies?) so I’m power washing off a crusty butt / legs every time I’m out there now. At least he’s brown?

  2. Ugh. I feel for you Remus. I had a gnat bite my face while I was on vacation and then my face freaked out and I look like I have a boil on my chin. I have no advice. Only commiseration.

  3. Poor, Remus! Your poor wallet, too! Since you are throwing money around, you might want to check out Hilton Herbs Mud Defender lotion (https://www.hiltonherbs.com/us/mud-defender-lotion). Yes, I know it says “mud defender,” but I accidentally discovered after being sent a sample bottle that it helps keep bugs off my Shiloh’s face. Shiloh has seasonal allergies and will rub his face and eyes, giving himself a fat eye and thus causing a vet call. I find the lotion outrageously expensive, but I like the scent, it is not sticky and when applied daily, it seems to work. I will say it is less expensive than a vet call. Will it help your horse, in your geographic area? I have no idea. But while we are on the topic of spending ridiculous amounts of money on horses, I thought I’d mention it.

  4. The diaper rash cream is my go to, then SWAT once the raw itchy stuff has subsided. Thumbs up to the Ecolicious Comfort Me stuff too, but honestly I think it’s just pretty smelling zinc cream 😉
