CAVEAT: WordPress has decided to hijack my post for the last hour by inserting quotes in some of the text. I finally got tired of trying to fix it cause as most of us know WORDPRESS SUCKS. So sorry about that. End Trans ( I love Jumping Jack Flash the movie and use END TRANS all the time)
Since I last posted we have had a heat wave among heat waves. Heat index 110 and higher, humidity in the 90s.
Not only that. My horse had a medical emergency and had the vet out on Saturday for a call due to his inability to sweat (He was sweating before then). I hadn’t had a vet cost in 2 weeks maybe. Let’s just dive in shall we? It was fun (NO it was not fun and this heat was no joke).
Last Thursday he started reacting to the heatwave and was huffing a bit. Not too bad but it was kind of unexpected. By Friday he was not in distress but not great. My friends at the barn hosed him twice before I got there on Friday.
Horse in front of two fans still huffing like crazy…
Sharing his fan with me
By Saturday am I had texted the vet on call and we decided to schedule an emergency farm call.
so apt for me lately
We had started him on Trihist earlier last week but we knew it might be a while before that started helping his airway. Once the vet arrived, she listened to his lungs and breathing (A LONG TIME SHE DID THIS). Came away and said yes he definitely has sounds in his lungs with crackling on one lung.
Well damn it. So we had already started him on Banamine the day before. So she gave him a Dex shot ran a blood test that checked for inflammation/infection (out of a 100 he scored zero so good news there). We put him on Dex, Ventipulmin, continued on Banamine, and restarted the beer. He also is getting One AC now as of yesterday).
And hosing him. OMG HOSING HIM NONSTOP. I went out to the barn FIVE times on Sat, FIVE TIMES on Sun, 4 times on Monday (THANK YOU LINDSAY for taking one) and 4 times Tues and yesterday. He is slightly better today (Thursday) but I am heading out soon to hose him again (Since it is not as hot but he is still not sweating).
He also has a big ass fan (OK Not a BIG ASS FAN but a big ass fan to me) in front of his stall. This horse is spoiled beyond spoiled. AND HE SPENT MORE OF MY MONEY AGAIN. SO MUCH MONEY.
Who me? Spend Mommy’s money? NEVER
Mark was home for the weekend so he was with me for the trips to the barn. Poor guy, it was SO HOT, I thought I might have to start hosing Mark as well. LOL. So much for a fun birthday weekend. It was fun for Finn who got spoiled a lot!
This was last night so you can definitely see he is improving.
Whew. It was kind of scary and it basically came down to a heat-induced asthma event my vet called it. Hopefully it will cool off and we can get back to riding this beast (of burden)!
My vet has had lots of calls in this heat wave so it was not just us suffering but still. Can we slow down on the vet bills just for a while? Please Finn? That would be great.
That is STRESSFUL and I’m hoping he starts to feel better way soon. Glad it wasn’t an infection. You don’t have to tell me about the heat or the bills (but I hope both of them start getting better)
I did this before when we lived in Texas. My barn owner would not allow it where Finn is now (I had to FIGHT To get the fans allowed and if my vet hadn’t intervened). YES we are looking for a better place LOL for my horse….thanks though
OMG how stressful must that have been?? I’m so sorry! But also so glad to know Finn is doing better ❤ I feel like throwing money at the vet has been on par lately haha! Crossing my fingers for you tho that he continues getting better. I saw in a previous comment you said the barn owner almost didn’t allow the fans. How frustrating is that??? The last barn where I was wouldn’t allow fans either – it is WILD that in these places that are so hot, the barns won’t allow more airflow! Baffles the mind, honestly.
Oh man! How scary! Glad it’s cooled off some and he’s doing better. That ventipulmin is like magic syrup so hopefully it does its job for Finn quickly!
